Technology RefreshA supplier of visual surveillance equipment, installation and support based near Bristol requested BlackRabbit’s consultants to evaluate the current system state and make recommendations. The company had recently been purchased and the new owners wanted to ensure that the IT would support the proposed aggressive growth strategy that was planned. The current system was a mix of several technologies installed on two servers and it was difficult to see at first glance which server carried which function. It was decided to use the current servers available but upgrade the operating systems and applications installed upon them. The proposed solution was to install both servers with Windows 2000 with both servers acting as Domain Controllers. Server 1 was to be installed with Exchange 2000 and be configured as the Internet gateway. Modems were installed for dial-in access and a separate fax card installed. Server 2 was used as a software and data server. This was installed by our consultants over a weekend to minimise disruption and support was provided on the Monday in case any issues arose. Ongoing support is provided remotely via dial-in in the first instance and on-site for more serious issues. The customer now has an easily administered IT environment using current operating systems and applications, which not only maps to current strategy but is also scalable to grow with the company. The environment benefits from a full support package which will minimise disruption should problems arise. Applications and software are now held within an organised structure to aid manageability, security has been put into place to secure the systems from attack over the Internet and all users, whether local or remote have access to the wealth of information available.
